Embrace Your Geekness Day - Inventors Edition

There’s no need to stuff your inner geek into the proverbial locker. This July 13th is “Embrace Your Geekness Day.” If you’ve got it, flaunt it!

Let your inner Geekness shine like these famous inventors:

• Albert Einstein
  No Geekness Day would be complete without Einstein. Like most of the geeks you’ll find here, he didn’t fit in at school, disliked being forced to listen to people who weren’t as smart as he was all day, and like many well-rounded nerds, loathed sports as well. He left at age 15, later earning a spot in college where he invented theories on special relativity, general relativity, matter and energy, and quantum physics, as well the famous mass formula equation, E=MC squared. These later led to more tangible inventions such as atomic energy, space travel, and everyone’s favorite - TV.
• Isaac Newton
  It’s hard to imagine the level of geek Newton was. He was able to calculate the speed of sound, the mass of the moon, and unleashed the law of gravity unto the world. Many of his theories and discoveries live on in today’s technological inventions.
• Nikola Tesla
  Another one of the greatest geeks of all time, as well as the arch rival of Thomas Edison, Tesla invented the alternating current (AC), the form of electricity that you have to thank for those gadgets you use all day, every day. Tesla also invented radio, remote controls, wireless communication, the electric motor, lasers, and kirlian photography, the predecessor of today’s x-rays.  
• Thomas Edison
  In addition to the array of entertaining quotes he left behind, “I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work,” Thomas Edison was also the inventor of the first incandescent light bulb, alkaline batteries, the phonograph (sound recording), the motion picture camera, and DC direct current electricity. With the help of electromagnetism, DC led to the first commercial electricity generation and distribution system, powering one square mile of Manhattan in 1882.
• Alexander Graham Bell
  Because both his mother and wife were deaf, Bell developed an interest in acoustics, leading him to create the first commercially practical telephone.

  Steve Jobs may well be one of today’s greatest inventors, and is the primary or co-inventor on over 200 patents. He co-founded Apple, one of the most successful business ventures of all time, and is responsible for inventing technology over the years ranging from the iMac, iPod, iPad, and iPhone to the glass staircases found in today’s Apple retail stores.
• Bill Gates
  No, Bill Gates did not invent the PC, but he did invent a software language that formed the basis for later DOS operating systems. He is a co-founder of the world’s largest computer software company – Microsoft, and has become one of the wealthiest people in the world. Hooray geeks!
• Bob Kahn, Vint Cerf, and Tim Berners-Lee
  Tim Berners-Lee invented the internet (hypertext), then Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf helped it along by inventing the transmission control protocol (TCP) and internet protocol (IP) at its heart. Thanks boys, without you we wouldn’t be reading this blog!
